What to do right now
- Move furniture and electronics out of the drip zone and put down buckets or a tarp on the floor.
- If the ceiling is bulging or sagging, keep everyone out of that room, trapped water is heavy and the drywall can let go all at once.
- If water is anywhere near a light fixture, ceiling fan or outlet, shut that circuit off at the breaker panel before touching anything.
- Photograph and video everything before you clean up: the ceiling, the walls, the floor, any damaged contents.
- Call your insurer to open a claim and note the claim number, most policies require prompt notice of a loss.
- Do not climb onto a wet, frosted or steep roof to look for the hole. Get a roofer with fall protection to do it.
Why the leak is almost never directly above the stain
Water that enters a roof at a nail pop, a lifted shingle or a failed flashing joint runs sideways along the underside of the deck and down the rafters before it finds a seam in the drywall. The wet spot on the ceiling in Erie can easily be six to fifteen feet away from the actual entry point. That is why a leak found from inside the attic, with a flashlight, on a rainy day, tracing the water back uphill, is usually diagnosed far faster than one guessed at from the ground.
The usual suspects in Pennsylvania homes
In practice, most emergency leak calls in this state come back to one of a short list: step flashing where a roof meets a wall or chimney, a cracked pipe boot around a plumbing vent, a valley where two roof planes drain together, an ice dam that forced meltwater backwards under the shingles, or fasteners that have worked loose after a wind event. Older homes with multiple additions have more roof-to-wall transitions, and every transition is a place water can get in.
Tarping is a repair pause, not a repair
A properly installed emergency tarp is strapped or battened over the ridge and runs well past the damaged area, not just laid over the hole. It buys days or weeks, not a season, and it is normally covered by insurers as a reasonable step to prevent further damage, keep the receipt.
Before you sign anything
Pennsylvania's Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act sets the thresholds below. Ask for the registration number, ask for a certificate of insurance, and be wary of anyone who wants a large cash deposit on the spot.
